Rome Day 2 AM
We woke up on our second day in Rome and got ready as quickly as we could. Did I mention in my last post that we were staying in a room that was made for ONE person? Yep, in order to save money, Normer booked us a room that had a single twin bed in it. And it wasn't much bigger than that twin bed. A double bed would not have fit at all!! It was quite snug but we managed pretty well.
We finally got out the door and stopped to get a machiatto espresso. Man, was that thing powerful but it was so good! After breakfast we hopped on the Metro to meet the other guys outside of the Vatican. We had planned to go to the Vatican first since we heard the lines can get pretty long the later you come. We got there around 9:30 and only had a 10 minute wait to get through security. Not bad at alll!
Here is Normer outside of St. Peter's Basilica. It's crazy how many chairs were set-up in the courtyard!!
We walked around St. Peter's Basilica for awhile...it was very impressive but I just wasn't that into it. I didn't really know what I was looking at most of the time so that's probably why.

We also walked through the Catacombs where all the popes are buried. But once again, I had no idea what I was looking at so we just rushed through. When we exited St. Peter's the line to get inside was outrageous. I am so glad that we went early! It was at least and hour to two hour wait. Whoa.
Next we headed to the Sistine Chapel. The line was very long and wrapped around the building but it moved pretty quickly. We read in our travel guide as we were standing in line that there is a way to go from the Sistine Chapel directly into St. Peter's Basilica thus you only have to stand in one line. Oh well. Now, I must say that I was really looking forward to seeing the Sistine Chapel. I don't really know what I was expecting to see but I had everything really built up in my mind.
In order to get to the Chapel they make you walk through all these hallways and rooms that are just smack full of people. People that are moving VERY slowly..

We pretty much (once again) didn't know what we were looking at. After about 12 rooms everything starts to blend together anyway. I would suggest taking the short cut into the Sistine Chapel directly. You'll see signs and I wish we had just taken it. After a very long time of shuffling our feet we finally arrived. I was not expecting what we saw. I really expected it to be way more ornate than it was. Yes, the paintings were amazing. It was even more amazing that they were on the ceiling and all painted by hand. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the chapel and we also weren't allowed to talk. The security crew kept yelling at us saying "NO FOTO" "SHHH!!" "QUIET PLEASE". I thought it was a little bit of an oxymoron to be screaming at us constantly to stop talking pics and to be quiet. Oh well.

We finally found the exit out of the Vatican Museum and it was time for lunch!! The next Rome post will feature lots of ancient Rome!
